Our 6th and penultimate day on camp starts with the Fariones Aquathlon race; a 2-lap 600m seas swim and a 2 lap 5km-ish run. I was able to handicap the start off everyone’s swim and run splits from teh triathlon that we did on Day 4 to make it more fun for everyone to race one another. admittedly this can seem a bit disheartening for the last starters, as half of the field have completed one lap of the swim before they even get in the water. But it did work out ok, with Marijcke The Rabbit only just holding off Dora to cross the line first! Dora elected to save tie in transition running in her wetsuit – good preparation for Amphiman coming up for her in May. Dave surprised us all and turned out to be a rather swift swimmer and runner and posted the fastest race time!
Results, with handicap time also shown, are here:
Following our swim-run excitement, it was out on the bikes ( and into the winds) for one of my favourite rides on this island – the original Ocean Lava route, with the Grand Finale of our QOM climbs – the Las Brenas Sprint. This is a steep climb of less than 1km, with handicap times therefor resulting in a very compact and exciting start sequence.
Bob missed out on the pre-race info answering toa call of nature, and so was pacing himself for a 5km climb …and got passed by pretty much everyone as they puffed and blew past him! The race to the line was pleasingly close – I had barely seconds to turn to see Aine and Josta’s sprint for the finish after gett
ing to the top myself. BUT – I’m pleased to report that I DID get there first albeit with a huge effort!
This was followed by the ascent of Femes, coffee and resuming the second half of the Ocean Lava route which included a very tough slog up and down Fire Mountain into strong headwinds..followed by a pretty blissful ride home across the Lava fields – with a ripping tailwind Aine and I reached 70kph on the flat!
Nice evening out for dinner in a local restaurant as Dave and Aine leave us tomorrow unfortunately that means Aine will be missing the finale of the camp and not in line to “win” it despite showing great talent, effort and humour all week.
